Operation Miconia

LEVEL I -- BASE PROGRAM.

1. IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTROL ACTIVITIES.

Activities & Timelines:

1) Search for and destroy Miconia plants in likely areas in a logical pattern.

The search for miconia during the FY2000 included work at 30 sites throughout five districts of Hawaii County.

During this quarter at Honaunau, South Kona 265 acres of forest land were surveyed.  No mature plants and only one seedling were found and destroyed.  The reduced number of plants found indicates that the crews are near the outward boundary of this infestation.  Field work is complete, pending results of a helicopter survey planned for October.

In South Kohala, a miconia plant was reported at Kamuela Highlands subdivision.  A mature tree was found and destroyed in a residential lot with a well-kept, landscaped yard.

Work in the North Hilo district was limited to two days at Ninole.  The crew revisited the core, treated one mature tree and 11 young plants, and resurveyed cane roads in the area.  A second trip to Ninole was to a botanical garden, where one potted miconia was found and remains, because the owner refused to destroy it.

Field crews visited nine sites in South Hilo.  Volunteers treated one site; staff field crews treated four.  Five sites received spot treatments where mature trees were visible from roadsides or reported to the hotline. About 60 acres were surveyed and treated this quarter, in this district.  141 trees were destroyed along with 2,628 immature plants.

Puna received treatment at 16 sites.  Six sites requiring intense searches were treated by regular staff, temporary staff and volunteers.  Roughly 290 acres were sweep-surveyed.  64 trees and 14,362 young plants were destroyed.  Site 93-Hale Puaa is the newly reported infestation, and was treated for the first time.  Road surveys and hotline report follow ups were conducted at 10 sites in Puna this quarter.  23 trees were destroyed along with 611 immature plants during these surveys.
