Mission Statement of Hawai’i Rare Plant Restoration Group (HRPRG)

To prevent the extinction of native Hawaiian plants and provide for their recovery through a cooperative administered off-site plant conservation system in collaboration with on-site management partners to sample, propagate, and reintroduce rare plants, and to advance the preservation of native plants and their habitats through effective communication and public education.

The Hawaii Rare Plant Restoration Group (HRPRG) is composed of many public and private agencies. This group, which includes over 60 participants, meets every 3-6 months to share information about monitoring, collecting, ex situ propagation, reintroduction and restoration projects, and to plan new initiatives. The Center for Plant Conservation Program Office* and the Department of Forestry and Wildlife host and facilitate this work group, coordinate mailings, and furnish meeting minutes. (*It is our understanding that the CPC Hawaii Program Office is presently [03/2001] unstaffed; the contact information presented at this link is out-of-date.) This group is currently working on monitoring and collection guidelines and a field form tailored for the Hawaiian flora. The HRPRG group is also developing strategies to fund a major "genetic safety net" initiative that will capture and restore the botanical diversity of Hawaii's most endangered plants.
