Status of Plagiohammis spinipennis as a biocontrol agent for Lantana camara in Hawaii

The beetle Plagiohammis spinipennis was introduced to Hawaii from 1954 to 1960. It affects the stems of lantana (Lantana camara), and highly damaging to the plant. An unidentified fungus associated with the lantana on which P. spinipennis became established rendered the stem soft and spongy, and may have facilitated establishment of the agent in Hawaii. Severe damage to lantana caused by this agent was reported in Pahala, Hawaii, in 1969. Host specificity trials indicated this agent could feed on teak, sesame, and species in three other families. (IMPORTANT NOTE: because of this wide host range, a Hawaii Department of Agriculture official stated that by today's [2009] standards "we would not release it into Hawaii.")
