National Native Seed Conference

The National Native Seed Conference, presented by the Institute for Applied Ecology and Bureau of Land Management, will focus on strategies to develop a national native seed supply that has the flexibility to meet short-term emergency stabilization and rehabilitation needs and to satisfy demand for longer-term restoration projects, including habitat restoration and hazardous fuels reduction. The conference will be held 17-21 May 2010 in Snowbird, Utah. (Info posted 26 October 2009)


Pesticide risk reduction education short courses

A schedule of short courses to prepare for the Hawaii Department of Agriculture's certification exam for restricted use pesticides is posted by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, University of Hawaii at Manoa. The next course will be on Maui on 17-19 February 2010. Deadline for applications is 15 January 2010. (Info updated 17 November 2009)


Public Lands Program Capacity Building Grants

The Public Lands Program Capacity Building Grants are designed to provide funding to strengthen the organizational effectiveness of community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofits whose mission is focused on serving a public lands site in the United States. Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council's 25th Annual Symposium

The 2010 FLEPPC symposium promises to be another thought-provoking meeting with the latest information on a variety of topics related to invasive species in Florida. The Center for Plant Conservation workshop

The Center for Plant Conservation applied plant conservation workshop will be held 16-21 November 2009 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Center for Plant Conservation, with botanists nationwide, has designed this training to present an overview of seventeen important conservation topics during one week of intensive classroom instruction. Joint Annual Meeting of the Society for Rangeland Management and the Weed Science Society of America

Meeting of the Society for Rangeland Management and the Weed Science Society of America will be held 7-11 February 2010 in Denver, Colorado. The meeting includes an invasive plant symposium. (Info posted 11 August 2009)


International invasive ant management workshop

A workshop on management of invasive ants will be held in Darwin, Australia on 27-29 April 2010. The workshop aims to facilitate networking among people involved in invasive ant management, and improve the incorporation of research and ant biology into management. New Zealand island invasives conference

Island Invasives: Eradication and Management conference will be held at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, from 8 to 12 February 2010. The conference is hosted by the Centre for Biodiversity and Biosecurity (University of Auckland and Landcare Research), in collaboration with the IUCN/SSC Invasive Species Specialist Group. Volunteers needed: Maui fishpond restoration

Help rebuild the Koieie Fishpond in Kihei, Maui on second Saturdays of each month from 8 to 11 am. The revitalization of Koieie serves to educate Maui's youth and communities about native Hawaiian fishponds, the Hawaiian culture, its traditions and practices. (Info posted 04 December 2008)


Two Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) conferences in February 2010

Two ISSG conferences will be held in New Zealand in February 2010. "Ecology of Insular Biotas" is the theme of the first conference, scheduled for 1-5 February, followed by "Island Invasives: Eradication and Management" on 8-12 February 2010. (Info posted 20 November 2008)

KAUPA (Kalihi Ahupua'a Ulu Pono Ahahui) is dedicated to restoring the natural and cultural resources within the Kalihi ahupua'a through education, outreach and action. West Nile Virus testing

The Hawaii Department of Health is testing dead birds for West Nile Virus in order to prevent this disease from arriving in Hawaii. Please help out and call 211 when you see a dead bird. 211 is the toll-free Aloha United Way hotline. Note the species of bird you see and the exact location.
