Kauai workshop: Ecology, restoration, and management of Hawaiian stream and riparian systems A free one-day workshop on Kauai  organized by the U.S Army Corp of Engineers will be held Friday 23 May 2008 at the cafeteria of Kauai Community College from 9am to 4:30 pm. Volunteers needed to help clean Kalihi Stream KAUPA's monthly 2nd Saturday for Sustainability stream clean-up  is your chance to demonstrate your aloha for the aina. KAUPA (Kalihi Ahupua'a Ulu Pono Ahahui) is dedicated to restoring the natural and cultural resources within the Kalihi ahupua'a through education, outreach and action. Navigating Change and Aloha Aina Teacher Workshop A workshop for educators  in celebration of the International Year of the Reef will be held 12 June 2008 on Coconut Island at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. Pesticides and the protection of our groundwater Pesticide education classes  will be offered on Oahu on May 6 and 8, 2008. Classes are two hours long and qualify for recertification credits from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. They focus on practices that help protect groundwater resources from contamination and comply with federal and local regulations. (Info posted 04 April 2008 by PN.)

Ecology, Restoration, and Management of Hawaiian Stream and Riparian Systems Workshop A workshop  on the ecology, management, and restoration of Hawaiian stream and riparian ecosystems is being sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center on 20-22 May 2008, at the Windward Community College, Oahu. 2008 Hawaii Conservation Conference (HCC) call for abstracts The annual Hawaii Conservation Conference, presented by the Hawaii Conservation Alliance, is the largest gathering of people actively involved in the protection and management of the natural environment in Hawaii and the Pacific Region. Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) 2009 grant proposals solicited Grant opportunities involving invasive species on Department of Defense controlled lands are available. ESTCP is seeking innovative environmental technology demonstrations as candidates for funding beginning in fiscal year (FY) 2009. The submission deadline for pre-proposals is March 13, 2008. New book on rice black bug A new book on rice black bug  will be released by the Philippines Rice Research Institute. West Nile Virus testing The Hawaii Department of Health is testing dead birds for West Nile Virus in order to prevent this disease from arriving in Hawaii. Please help out and call 211 when you see a dead bird. 211 is the toll-free Aloha United Way hotline. Note the species of bird you see and the exact location.
