HEAR is currently funded by the Pacific Basin Information Node (PBIN) of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) through the Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center (PIERC) (USGS) with support from Hawaii Cooperative Studies Unit (UH-Hilo). Historically, HEAR has also received funding and/or support from PCSU (UH) and HALE (NPS). More details are available online.

HEAR originated at the USGS/BRD's Haleakala Field Station (Maui, Hawaii) of the Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center (PIERC) of the U.S. Geological Survey's Biological Resources Division (formerly the National Biological Service) through the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) based at the University of Hawaii Department of Botany.
