Naturalized

Comments:  Widely planted and naturalized on Niue (Space & Flynn, 2000).

On Ma‘uke, Cook Islands, large areas of Tradescantia spathacea are growing in the forest understory, on rocks, etc. (similar to the behavior noted on Niue) (Space & Flynn, 2002).

Commonly planted (often in cemeteries) and escaping in Tonga (Space & Flynn, 2001).

Planted but not (yet) escaping in Samoa (Space & Flynn, 2002).

Control:

Physical:  Hand pull or dig out seedlings and scattered plants.

Chemical:  Cut down large infestations and treat the regrowth with herbicide (Weber, 2003; p. 437).
