Description: "Tree to 75 feet tall. Leaves compound; leaflets 5, elliptic to elliptic-oblong, 3-18 inches long, both sides ± scaly, base rounded to wedge-shaped, apex sharply acute to tapering. Inflorescence a panicle, usually many-flowered. Flower calyx cup-shaped, 0.4-0.8 inches long, 2-lipped, leathery, scaly, usually persistent; corolla 2-4 inches long, lavender or pale magenta, throat yellow fading to white; stamens included. Fruit linear-cylindric, 8.5-15 inches long" (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 189).
