Habit:  shrub

Description:  "Herbs or shrubs 1-3 m tall, yellowish to brownish stellate pubescent.  Leaf blades discolorous, lanceolate to ovate, 3-12 cm long, base subcordate to truncate, petioles shorter than blades.  Flowers in open, leafy, diffuse panicles, peduncles and pedicels capillary, calyx rotate, 5-7 mm in diameter; corolla purplish red, sometimes orangish red apically, reflexed, petals 3-5 mm long; staminal column purplish, 2.5-3 mm long, pubescent; anthers 10 or more on spreading filaments.  Mericarps 5, straw-colored, ovoid-trigonous, 2-3 mm long, acute or 2-beaked apically, tuberculate dorsally, striate-reticulate laterally, stellate pubescent.  Seeds brown, ca. 1.5 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent"  (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 901).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "reported as naturalized and common in fields and disturbed sites" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 901).

Native range:  "Native to the New World tropics and subtropics, the Caribbean, and the Galápagos and Marquesas Islands" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 901).
