Habit:  herb

Description:  "Erect, glabrous perennial herbs; stems 3-10 dm long.  Leaves primarily basal, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, usually 8-16 cm long, 0.8-1.8 cm wide, glabrous, margins erose-crenulate, apex acute, base cordate to very broadly hastate, petioles usually 2.5-9.5 cm long.  Flowers perfect, 5-16 in clusters, these widely spaced in racemose, sometimes branched inflorescences; outer tepals ca. 1 mm long, the valves ca. 1.2 mm long, enlarging to 2-4 mm long in fruit, the margins with hooked awn-like teeth more than 1 mm long, the apical one slightly longer than others, the faces without tubercles.  Nuts dull brown, ca. 2 mm long"  (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 1066-1067).

Habitat/ecology:  Collected at 850 m on East Maui and 1,520 and 1,610 m in dry open areas on the island of Hawai‘i (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 1066-1067). In New Zealand, "open, often very dry situations such as cliff tops and coastal headlands, roadsides, waste places, poor pastures, stony riverbeds and on talus deposits" (Webb et al., 1988; p. 982).  In Papua New Guinea (native); "in open, usually somewhat disturbed, localities, at 2000 m to more than 3000 m altitude; creek-banks in grassland, roadsides, gardens"  (Womersley, 1978; p. 248).
