Habit:  shrub

Description:  "A shrub a few feet tall with rather stout warty stems, leaves thick, broadest at or just below the middle, tapering gradually to a long or short tip and slightly to the rounded or heartshaped base, from about 4 in. long and 1 3/4 in. wide to about 10 in. long and 4 in. wide, a pair of distinct side-veins rising from near the base of the midrib, leafstalk none; inflorescences from amongst the leaves, or from the bare stem below them, much branched and many-flowered, usually about 4-5 in. long, the whole inflorescence cherry-red, or peach, or salmon-colored, flowers about 1/2 in. long, petals 4, stamens 8, berry blue-black"  (Henderson, 1959; p. 136).

Habitat/ecology:  "Common on trees in the mountains, occasionally in the lowlands"  (Henderson, 1959; p. 136).
