Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, "commonly cultivated and often naturalized in valleys, abandoned homesites, and through accidental plantings from discarded seeds" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 196-197). On Niue, "many trees are more or less adventive since seedlings grow freely" (Sykes, 1970; p. 42). In Fiji, "often abundantly naturalized in dry areas and along roads and trails as a shade tree from near sea level to about 800 m" (Smith, 1985; pp. 450-451). In Tonga, "introduced for its fruit and common about villages, this tree grows spontaneously in thickets, along roadsides, and so forth" (Yuncker, 1959; p. 170). In New Caledonia, "l'espèce est maintenant plantée un peu partout et parfois naturalisée" (MacKee, 1994; p. 14).
