Other Latin names:  Quamoclit pennata Bojer

Common name(s): [more details]

Chamorro: cabello del angel

English: Cupid's flower, Indian-pink, cardinal climber, cypress vine, cypressvine morning-glory, hummingbird vine, red-jasmine, star of Bethlehem, star-glory, star-of-Bethlehem, sweet-willy

French: cheveux de Venus, liane rouge

Japanese: ruk&333;-s&333;

Palauan: asangao

Spanish: cambustera, clavellina, regadero

Habit:  vine

Description:  "Slender climber with milky sap; leaves apparently pinnate, with small linear segments, actually pectinate to the midrib, with 8-20 pairs of segments, less than 1 mm wide; leaf up to 10 cm long x 6 cm wide overall; glabrous; cymes with 1-4 flowers, these small, dark red; calyx lobes less than 6 mm long, awned; corolla 3-4.5 cm long, (rarely white), limb 1.7-2 cm wide, deeply lobed; fruit ovoid, 6-8 mm long; seeds tufted with very small hairs"  (Stone, 1970; p. 494).

Habitat/ecology:  In Fiji, "frequently abundant as a weed in cultivated areas and along streets from near sea level to about 200 m, sometimes cultivated" (Smith, 1991; pp. 56-57).  In New Caledonia, "souvent cultivée comme plante ornementale, parfois échappée des jardins sans jamais arriver à se fixer dans la végétation secondaire et anthropophile" (Heine, 1984; pp. 50, 52). In Australia, "it has smothers native trees and shrubs and is becoming increasingly problematic around Darwin [Northern Territory], where it has covered grass swards.  In Queensland, it is widely distributed in a number of habitats ranging from the fringes of mangroves to rainforest and eucalypt forest.  It may have the potential to invade early successional stages of tropical monsoon vine thickets and compete with native vine species." (Csurhes & Edwards, 1998; p. 170).

Propagation:  Seed

Native range:  "Originally from tropical America but now widely cultivated and naturalized throughout tropical areas" (Smith, 1991; pp. 56-57).
