Habit:  vine

Description:  "Stems and undersides of young leaves red-hairy.  Leaves to 13 x 3 cm, glossy, of juvenile stage 3-lobed, 2 lateral lobes pointing sideways, yellow-green, of arborescent stage ovate to rounded, darker green"  (Huxley, 1992; vol. 2, p. 512).

"High-climbing liana; sap sweet-scented; star-shaped hairs on live plant orange or reddish, rays always pressed flat against surface, drying whitish with central reddish spot.  Leaf blades on vegetative shoots usually shortly 3-lobed, 3-7.5 x 3-8 inches, glossy to dull yellow-green to emerald"  (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 132).

Habitat/ecology:  "Mediterranean coast"  (Huxley, 1992; vol. 2, p. 512).

Propagation:  Seed; rooting from nodes.

Native range:  Algeria and North Africa (Staples & Herbst, 2005; p. 132).

Voucher cited: Danton I(5/123)1488. "Esta liana vigorosa se encuentra en varios sitos del pueblo de San Juan Bautista, algunas veces está fuera de los lugares cultivados. Esta especie cubre el suelo de un tapís denso de hojas, en sotobosque y trepa a lo largo de los troncos de los árboles. Con el tiempo, esta liana logra ahogar su soporte. Es una evidencia que la penetración de esta especie en la mirtisilva fernandeziana seria como la llegada de un enemigo más, tal vez tan temible como la zarzamora, aúnque sin espinas".
