Habit: herb
Description: "Clumped perennial herbs 2-7 dm tall, villous or sometimes glabrous. Leaves simple, clustered toward base, spatulate to linear or linear-lanceolate, usually 5-20 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide, with 1-2 pairs of entire-margined lateral lobes or margins entire, the lower ones petiolate, becoming sessile above. Heads few, on long naked peduncles usually 2-4 dm long; outer involucral bracts lanceolate, 5-10 mm long, margins scarious and ciliate; chaffy bracts attenuate; rays yellow, 1.5-3 cm long; disk corollas yellow, usually 5-lobed; pappus of 2 short scales. Achenes 2-3 (-4) mm long, margins with thin, flat wings." (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 289, 1859).
Habitat/ecology: In Hawaii, "commonly cultivated and now sparingly naturalized" (Wagner et al., 1999; pp. 289, 1859). A weed of agricultural land and wasteland in South Africa and waste areas and roadsides in Queensland, Australia (Csurhes & Edwards, 1998; p. 152).
Propagation: Wind-dispersed seed and rhizomes (Csurhes & Edwards, 1998; p. 152).
Native range: United States and Canada (Ontario); cultivated and naturalized elsewhere (GRIN).
