Habit:  vine

Description:  "Large lianas. Leaves oblong-ovate, 6-18 cm long, 2.5-7 cm wide, margins with opposed teeth, apex acuminate, base cuneate, truncate, or rounded. Flowers in reddish purple cymes; petals reddish violet, green toward apex, ca. 4 mm long; nectary disk pale yellow, deeply lobed, margins thick, recurved. Berries dark red, 2-2.5 cm in diameter" (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1342).

Habitat/ecology:  In Hawai‘i, dry areas near sea level (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1342).

Propagation:  Bird-dispersed seed.

Native range:  Brunei, Indonesia (Celebes, Java), Malaysia (GRIN).

Comments:  Closely related to and perhaps only a form of Cissus repens Lam. (Wagner et al., 1999; p. 1342).

A related species, C. quadrangula, is also naturalized in Hawai‘i (Fred Kraus, personal communication).
