Habit:  vine

Description:  "Twining perennial herb with slender thinly pubescent or glabrescent stems, sometimes rooting below. Leaf lamina narrowly to broadly oblong up to 6 x 2 cm., obtuse at the apex but minutely mucronate, cuneate at base, glabrescent or thinly pubescent, particularly at the margins and on the nerves below; petiole up 10 mm. long. Flowers usually solitary; peduncle up to 3ú5 cm. long; pedicels up to 6 mm. long. Sepals ovate up to 15 mm. long, acute, enlarging in fruit up to 23 mm. and becoming scarious and venose. Corolla white, about 2 cm. long. Capsule elongate-ovoid, glabrous. Seeds black, minutely pilose, with a tuft of brown hairs near the hilum"  (Aluka [no current valid link to reference is available])

"A creeping or twining vine; leaf blades narrowly lanceolate to ovate, 4-8 cm long, up to 2 (-5) cm broad, obtuse to acute at base; 3 outer sepals 12-20 mm long, becoming scariose and venose in fruit; corolla white, 20-30 mm long; filaments pilose at base; fruit ovoid, 1.5-2 cm long, subtended by enlarged calyx, the seeds 4-6 mm in diameter, sometimes woolly at angles"  (Smith, 1991; p. 44).

Habitat/ecology:  In Fiji, "found sparingly as a weed in cultivated areas, sometimes in swamps and forest in open country near sea level"  (Smith, 1991; p. 44).

Native range:  "Originally from tropical America, now pantropical and occurring eastward in the Pacific at least to Fiji and Tonga"  (Smith, 1991; p. 44).
